The box urn is the oldest shape in our collection and the quietest. We build each one from solid [maple, cherry, black walnut or white oak], choosing and matching the boards so the grain runs unbroken around the corners, then finish it by hand with oil rubbed in coat by coat until the wood glows from beneath the surface rather than shining on top of it. A name, dates and a line of your choosing are engraved into the lid; if you would like a carved portrait or motif, we set one into the lid as we do on our turned urns. Nothing about it is veneer, film or stain pretending to be something else. It is one wood, all the way through.
Solid hardwood is a living material, and we build for that: the panels are sized and joined so the box can move with dry winters and humid summers as wood must, and the finish is one you can renew yourself, decades from now, with a soft cloth and a little oil. The ashes rest inside in the sealed bag your provider returns them in; the base is fitted with [four brass screws], so it opens easily and closes for good.
